Unlike SG's FVF where I prefer to smoke the flakes whole,the Bracken smokes better for me if I rub it out well.Upon lighting, the fire-cured and a hint of the topping work nicely together to deliver a somewhat sweet but stout smoke,after the first third of the bowl the topping gives way to the burley,and the taste becomes a little creamier and fuller.Its at this point if I puff too fast my tongue gets peppered with nicotine and an unpleasant hot sauce taste,easily remidied by slowing down. The kinship with 1792 is undeniable, but thankfully, without the large dose of Tonquin. It comes very moist and needs to be dried. Similar Blends: Samuel Gawith 1792 and Lakeland Dark. This was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. It is very much like Gawith & Hoggarth's Dark Flake, with some sort of essence added. I tried "Z" stuffing and hand rubbing. I think if you take this tobac very slow it pays off. Bracken Flake has to be one of the slowest burning blends I've piped, it seems endless! If you like a lot of nicotine grab a tin. A lucious flavor. It burns to ash and crumbs, every puff is delicious, and sometimes the topping will reappear at the end, as if waving goodbye. They are both delicious in their own way. Don't ever attempt this blend before letting it dry out for a bit but it's a beauty. I might get it again, but it won't be something I'm craving after. Cause They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore. I won't give Bracken 4 stars as I feel it is inferior to the likes of FVF and 1792 but I find it quite enjoyable and will continue to keep it in my Lakeland rotation as it just agrees with my palate. But certainly SG's dark entries are winners too, in the # 1 and 2 categories IMO. Otherwise, it hits you with no forgiveness and becomes more acrid too. The tins seem to be pretty damp, so a good bit of drying time should be expected.
