University Establishes Inclusion and Diversity Council The same founding principles have guided our community over time as we continue to work towards a more inclusive and diverse campus. This course provides students with an overview of refugee movements with a focus on cultural encounters across the world. Why are urban areas "racialized"? Our 437-square-mile service area is multicultural, and we develop the library's collection with our readers' wide range of interests in mind. We will focus primarily on Black Americans, but will also consider white ethnic groups and other ethnic groups in discussion. This musical and historical survey of African-American music and its important contributions to American culture examines African heritage, slave songs, and the colonial era, followed by the role of African-Americans in the music and culture of the Revolutionary and Civil War periods. Languages and Identities: Sociolinguistic Approaches to Spanish in the U.S. Culture, Civilization, and Literature in the Spanish-American Caribbean Region. This course examines and analyzes film by Spanish and Latin-American directors (Buuel, Saura, Littn, Sanjins, etc.). Moreover, the relationship of race to power is also a central analytical theme. After completing this course, students take electives drawn from the College of Arts and Sciences that provide context and skills that inform the experience of diverse people. The course addresses the ways in which the media, popular culture, work, and schools have been pivotal sites for the creation and maintenance of gender performances, and explores sites of resistance in art and activism. Major works of art and architecture will be examined to understand the respective cultures and traditions of these regions.
